I wonder if Earthlings will encounter aliens in my lifetime. It is known that there are planets like Earth elsewhere in space. We don't have the Star Wars-like technology to travel to these planets, but what if they are already venturing towards us? If they've been around as long as this planet and the rate of evolution is the same as ours, what form will life on their planet look like (I am thinking of homo-reptilia, courtesy of Dr Who). This world is a big place to me, only because the limitations of perception in my mind, where the internal scale is small. And this magnifies everything. So if we take that to be true, then Earth is actually a microcosm of something bigger. We start with the Earth, we zoom out till we see it in place with the solar system, then the galaxy, then with other galaxies and what is there after that? Is space contained in something else? Will we know this sometime in the near future? How did space and everything in it came to be? It's actually a little unnerving to think about it. I feel like we are extremely insignificant. Like everything is insignificant. Everything seems to be a construct of human devising and none of it is actually very important. Even saving the forests and preventing the extinction of other species on some level seems selfish because we trying to maintain the ecosystem lest our way of life is disrupted.
It's mind-boggling.
I still blame evolutionary psychology for opening this can of worms regarding the human race. Everything about us is just so contrived and almost everything that we do/feel/are can be explained in the context of our evolution. And those that qualify the use of 'almost' too will be there soon enough, once someone gets a brainwave and resolves the conflict.
This whole post might be in some way influenced by thinking about The Doctor's travels.Labels: microspeck
